Project
Summary and Feedback
Many churches
have established ministries to serve the visually impaired people, the majority
of whom are marginalized and poor. Overwhelmed with providing for basic
needs, these ministries depend on the Bible Society for Braille Scriptures at
an affordable price.
The cost is a
huge challenge as a single Bible - four large cartons of 21 volumes - costs
about $120 to produce, which is 6,000
EGP! A New Testament costs $30. According to available
funding, the Bible Society offers these Scriptures for a symbolic donation of
just $4 (200 EGP) and the NT's for $1 (50 EGP). Usually, it is the Church
that pays for the Bible, and not the individual receiving it.
Bible
engagement is increased as people with visual impairment receive the Word of
God in their own language of Braille. Furthermore, they feel valued to receive
such a valuable resource, and often share it with others, reading to both the
sighted and the blind. Magdy, one of the volunteers reviewing and packaging the
Braille Scriptures, reminds us that “Making the Bible available in Braille
actually serves the whole family, as the visually impaired person is often the
only literate person in the family that is able to read the Bible to their
illiterate household.”
